Until Dawn follows a group of friends who venture into a remote mountain valley searching for answers about a girl who vanished there a year earlier. When night falls and a masked killer begins hunting them, they discover there is no escaping this valley — only dying in it, again and again, each time waking to a different nightmare. David F. Sandberg's adaptation of the PlayStation horror game delivers exactly what its tagline promises: every night, a different kind of monster.

One year after her sister Melanie vanished, Clover travels to the remote Glore Valley with her ex-boyfriend Max, best friend Nina, friend Megan, and Nina's boyfriend Abe. Their last stop before heading deep into the valley is a gas station where Melanie was last seen — locals warn them away and speak of an old mining disaster — but the group press on. They settle into an abandoned visitor center for the night, intending to use it as a base while searching for clues.
As night falls, a masked killer — clown-ish mask, pickaxe — begins hunting them through the visitor center and surrounding woods. One by one the group is murdered in brutal slasher fashion. Then the night resets. They wake in the visitor center, alive and uninjured, with a vague sense of déjà vu. They notice a large hourglass in the main room flipping to begin the night, their own missing-person posters on the wall, and small changes that confirm they are reliving the same evening. They are trapped in a time loop, hunted each reset by a different kind of threat.
On subsequent loops they discover more rules. In one iteration, Megan becomes possessed — her body contorted by an unseen force — and dies grotesquely. Clover is dragged to a decrepit house where an elderly valley woman tells her she can either survive the night or become part of it, then gases her before disintegrating to dust. Each loop adds another signature to the guestbook and more posters: evidence they have already died many times. They realize they have a finite number of resets before the valley claims them permanently.
Deeper into the visitor center, the group finds exhibits about a mining disaster that killed over 1,100 people, and warnings about wendigos — cannibalistic creatures tied to the mine. In one loop, Max finds a videotape: a man trapped in the same building, reliving the night over thirteen loops, slowly going insane before transforming into a feral wendigo creature. Dr. Hill — a psychiatrist from the original game's mythology — appears on the tape explaining he has been monitoring the ordeal. The group realize they are his latest experiment.
Clover contacts Hill by radio. He claims there is a way out: one of them must die permanently while the others survive the night, satisfying the valley's curse. He tempts Clover further by hinting she might see Melanie if she meets him alone in the woods. An argument erupts — some want to follow Hill's rule and sacrifice someone; others refuse, believing this is exactly what he wants.
Piecing together her sister's fate, Clover eventually encounters a wendigo in the valley's collapsed underground ruins that is Melanie — trapped in the loop long enough to transform. In a brutal, anguished confrontation, the wendigo hesitates and snarls, recognizing something of its former self. Clover, sobbing, apologizes for letting their last words be an argument. Then she kills her sister — a mercy, and a choice made from love rather than survival instinct.
In the final loop, the group resolves to confront Hill directly rather than obey him. They fight through wendigos and reach Hill's control hub — a room of monitors showing every prior loop, evidence of each manufactured scenario, and Megan locked in a cell as his next subject. Hill reveals his philosophy: Glore Valley is a closed system where trauma and repeated death create monsters, and the "one must die" rule was never a law of the curse but a psychological lever to see if the group would sacrifice each other.
Clover tricks Hill into drinking heavily contaminated valley water — the same water that accelerates wendigo transformation across loops. His body mutates and collapses grotesquely. She grabs his keys, frees Megan, and the group flees through the unraveling underground ruins as the curse destabilizes. They reach their car and drive out of Glore Valley as dawn breaks — the first group to escape with their humanity intact, their refusal to sacrifice each other breaking the cycle in a way none of Hill's previous subjects managed.
In the closing scene, a new vehicle pulls up to the visitor center they just fled, and faint ambient sound suggests the valley's presence endures. Hill, now part of the loop himself, may continue his experiments on whoever comes next.
