The Third Parent (2027): Release Date, Who Tommy Taffy Is, and Where to Read the Original

The Third Parent is in US theaters from January 22, 2027, through Bleecker Street, as a limited release.

There is no announced streaming date, no announced digital rental date, and no announced streaming partner. Bleecker Street has not committed to anything for this film, and we are not going to publish a guess as though it were a date.

One thing to be careful of while searching: this film has carried three different dates. It was announced for August 7, 2026, moved to January 22, 2027, and some listings still show January 20, 2027. The January 22 date is the one Bleecker Street and TMDB both carry. Older coverage referring to a 2026 release is simply stale.

Tommy Taffy is the antagonist, played by Crispin Glover. In Witherow's story he arrives at a family's house and announces that he is now part of it, installing himself as a third parent and a disciplinarian. He is described as doll-like: human in shape, wrong in the details.

The horror of the character is not that he kills the family. It is that he stays, and that he frames what he does to them as improvement. The film's own logline keeps this: an anomaly "overpowers a family in order to teach them how to become better people and more compliant citizens."

That last phrase is the tell for what kind of horror this is. The premise is not a monster hunting people through a house. It is an authority figure who cannot be removed, whose demands are framed as being for your own good, and to whom the family is expected to be polite. Bleecker Street has said it believes Glover's Tommy Taffy will be "the next great horror villain."

The film is set around a neighbourhood Fourth of July celebration, which puts a story about enforced compliance and better citizenship on the most patriotic day in the American calendar. Whether the film does anything with that is a question for after we have watched it.

"The Third Parent" was published by Elias Witherow on r/nosleep, Reddit's horror-fiction subreddit, in 2016. It spread the way creepypasta does, through readings and retellings rather than through a publisher.

Two things complicate finding it today, and neither is well explained anywhere.

First, the original Reddit post was removed. As of April 2025 it is no longer up, taken down for a content-policy violation, so the canonical first publication is not readable at its original address. What circulates now are mirrors, narrations, and reprints.

Second, "The Third Parent" is also the title of a novel Witherow later wrote expanding the same material, and the saga now runs across several stories. So a search for the title returns a short story, a novel, and a film, all with the same name and the same author. The film was acquired as an adaptation of the creepypasta specifically, which is how Bleecker Street and the trade reporting describe it, though TMDB tags it "based on novel or book."

We have catalogued the film's source as a short story for that reason. If the finished film turns out to draw on the novel instead, we will correct it.

We do not know yet, and we will not guess. We score films only after watching them, so its Fear, Gore, Atmosphere and Intensity values will be published on the film page once we have.

What can be said now is what kind of fear the premise is built for. Nothing in the material suggests a jump-scare film. A being that installs itself in a home and stays is a sustained-dread structure, closer to a home-invasion film that never ends than to a haunting. Our five axes exist to separate those measurements, and this is a film where the Fear and Intensity numbers are likely to diverge from the Gore number rather than track it.

No MPA rating has been announced, no runtime has been announced, and no trailer has been released. We will update this page as each is confirmed.

The score is by Butch Vig, which is not a name that usually appears on a horror film. Vig produced Nirvana's Nevermind and drums for Garbage. Film Music Reporter reported his hiring in April 2025.

The cinematographer is Larry Smith, who made his debut as a director of photography on Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, having worked as a gaffer for Kubrick before that. He later shot Only God Forgives for Nicolas Winding Refn.

Neither credit is mentioned on the aggregator pages currently holding this film's search results, and together they say something about the intent: a first-time feature director was given a Kubrick cinematographer and a Grammy-winning producer. This is not a cheap creepypasta cash-in, whatever the finished film turns out to be.
