How the scoring works
Films are scored from 0 to 10 on five axes. Fear is how frightening the film is. Gore is how graphic it is. Atmosphere is the strength of its prevailing mood. Intensity is the severity of the ordeal it puts you through, which is not the same as how scary it is. Overall is the curator verdict on the film as a whole.
Scores come from two curators rather than a crowd average, which is why a film can sit well below its consensus rating elsewhere. Jump scare counts are almost always compiled from published jump-scare databases, primarily WheresTheJump, rather than counted by us. Where our curators did count a film themselves, that film's page says so.
Your answers are treated as preferences rather than hard filters, so the finder always returns a full ranked list instead of dead-ending on an empty result. Films missing a score on an axis you asked about are ranked on the evidence available and rank below a film that matches on confirmed data.

- How does the horror movie finder work?
- You answer up to four questions about how frightening, how gory, and how jump-scare-heavy you want the film to be, plus the mood you are after. Every film in the catalog carries curator scores from 0 to 10 for fear, gore, atmosphere and intensity, and a counted number of jump scares. Your answers become targets, and films are ranked by how closely they match.
- Do I need an account to use it?
- No. The finder is free and needs no sign-in. An account only adds features that depend on your own history, like saving films to a watchlist.
- Can it find horror movies without jump scares?
- Yes. Answer the jump scare question with the option to avoid them, and films with a counted jump scare total of zero or one rank highest. Jump scares are counted per film rather than estimated, so this is a real filter rather than a guess.
- Why do some films show fewer numbers than others?
- Fear, gore and atmosphere are scored for every film in the pool. Intensity and jump scare counts are still being filled in, so a film missing one is ranked on the evidence available and shown without that number rather than being hidden.
