Common questions about horror movies with no jump scares

What are good horror movies with no jump scares?
Every film here has a counted jump-scare total of one or zero — tension and dread without being startled out of your seat.
How do you count jump scares?
Counts come from editorial curation, not an algorithm; films we haven't counted yet are left off entirely rather than hallucinated. A film qualifies for this list at one jump scare at most.
Is horror still scary without jump scares?
Yes — arguably more so. Removing the jolt forces the fear to come from atmosphere and dread, which lingers longer than a startle.
What counts as a jump scare?
A sudden sensory spike engineered to make you jump; usually a loud sound paired with an abrupt visual (a figure lunging into frame, a hand on a shoulder). We count discrete, deliberate ones; ambient tension and slow reveals don't qualify.
Why would someone want horror without jump scares?
Because the jolt is involuntary — not necessarily earned — it can work whether the film is good or not. Viewers who come here are usually after fear that's built rather than sprung: dread, atmosphere, the slow tightening of tension that a cheap startle can actually break.
