The thrill is in the hunt.
In the vast middle of nowhere, evil is disguised as a helping hand.
Three backpackers driving across the Australian outback visit the remote Wolf Creek meteor crater and return to find their car dead, their watches stopped, and no help for miles. A friendly local named Mick Taylor offers to tow them to his camp and fix the car overnight. By morning, the hospitality is over.

Overall
Three backpackers — British tourists Liz and Kristy, and their Australian friend Ben — road-trip across the outback to visit the Wolf Creek meteor crater. After the hike, they return to find their car won't start and their watches have inexplicably stopped. As night falls with no help on the horizon, a rugged and seemingly warm local named Mick Taylor pulls up, tows their car to his remote camp, and fixes them up with food and drink around the fire. They fall asleep feeling lucky.
Kristy wakes up tied and gagged. Mick is not who he appeared to be. He is a practiced, methodical killer who has been hunting tourists in the outback for years, using the isolation of the interior as his cover. Kristy manages to free herself and discovers a shed containing cameras, passports, and personal effects from previous victims — a museum of the missing. She finds a running car and floors it, but Mick runs her down and brings her back.
Liz finds Ben strung up in a shed, cuts him down, and retrieves a rifle. She shoots Mick twice. He goes down but doesn't stay down. As Liz and Ben scramble for a car, Mick drives a hunting knife through the back of Liz's seat, impaling her from behind.
Ben escapes into the outback and wanders in deteriorating condition for days before being found by a passing couple. Title cards close the film: Liz and Kristy were never found. Ben's account could not be substantiated. A man matching Mick Taylor's description was identified as a suspect in multiple disappearances but was never charged. He remains at large.
