Megan Is Missing

2011 · NR · 1h 26m

Two fourteen-year-olds, one online predator, and a found-footage record nobody should ever watch.

Megan Stewart and Amy Herman are inseparable best friends — popular, oversharing, and documenting everything through webcams and home video. When Megan vanishes after agreeing to meet a boy she met online, the film follows what was captured before, during, and after through their own footage, news reports, and recovered camera tapes. Compiled in mockumentary form by Michael Goi, it is widely regarded as one of the most disturbing American horror films of the 2010s.

Megan Stewart is a popular, sexually precocious fourteen-year-old in suburban Los Angeles whose daily life is documented through webcam chats, casual phone clips, school footage, and home video shot by her socially awkward best friend Amy Herman. The opening half of the film assembles these fragments into a portrait of two unsupervised teenagers oversharing online. Megan meets 'Josh,' who claims to be seventeen, in an open chat room. Their conversations migrate to private webcam sessions; Josh keeps his own camera off, blaming a broken laptop. The flirtation accelerates over weeks until Megan agrees to meet him at a diner.

She is never seen alive again. Local news segments and a single low-quality clip of the parking lot outside the diner — showing Megan being pulled out of frame by an unseen man — become the only public record of the abduction. Amy continues her video diary to keep Megan's memory alive, posts pleas online, and tries to track Josh's other usernames. Three weeks later, while filming herself alone at a park, Amy is also abducted on camera.

The final section is presented as recovered footage from the abductor's handheld. Amy is chained in a filthy basement, repeatedly forced to beg for food and water, sexually assaulted on camera by a masked man, and broken down over several days. Megan's emaciated corpse is chained against the wall in the same room, revealed when the camera pans. Eventually the man drags a large plastic barrel into the woods at night. He throws Megan's body and the still-living Amy into the barrel together, seals the lid, and shovels dirt over it while the camera keeps filming. The screen goes black mid-shovel. Closing text states that both girls remain missing and the case is unsolved.
