Lake Mungo

2009 · R · 1h 27m

A grieving family's home video tapes start showing a daughter who shouldn't be in them.

After their teenage daughter drowns in a country dam, the Palmer family of Ararat, Victoria begin seeing her in photographs and home video — figures in the background, faces in windows. They hire a parapsychologist and turn the cameras on themselves, hoping evidence will help them understand what they keep missing. Joel Anderson's Australian mockumentary built a sleeper reputation as one of the quietest, most patient entries in 2000s horror.

Lake Mungo presents itself as a sober documentary about the Palmer family of Ararat, Victoria, in the months after the drowning death of their sixteen-year-old daughter Alice. On a family outing to a local dam, Alice disappears underwater; her body is recovered and the death is ruled accidental.

In the weeks after the funeral, the family describes strange phenomena in their house — noises, a felt presence, glimpses of a figure that could be Alice. Mathew sets up video cameras to capture it. Grainy stills show what appears to be Alice in doorways and reflected in windows. The parents engage Ray Kemeny, a parapsychologist, who works with June through recurring nightmares of an unnaturally cold, water-filled Alice's room.

The documentary then turns on its own evidence. Mathew confesses that he faked most of the ghost imagery — digitally inserting Alice into the footage and staging shots, all to push June toward exhuming the body so she could accept the death. The film replays earlier scenes alongside the manipulations.

The Palmers begin uncovering a life Alice kept hidden. She had been babysitting for a couple across the street, the Ransoms, and had a sexual relationship with both of them, recorded on tape and concealed in their house. She had been disappearing at odd hours and had buried a box of personal items in the yard, as if arranging for what would come after. Friends describe her as anxious and convinced something bad was going to happen, though she would not say what.

The film returns to the imagery once more. In some of the footage Mathew did not alter, a pale figure is still there — zoomed in, it appears to be Alice in her drowned state. Something real had been in the house alongside the staging.

A school-trip visit Alice took to Lake Mungo, a dry lake bed in New South Wales, takes on new weight. The family recovers a phone she buried in the sand during that trip. Its footage shows her walking the lake at night until she drops the phone and is approached from the darkness by a figure — herself, bloated and discoloured as she would look in death months later. Alice had encountered her own ghost on that trip, understood she was going to die, and prepared.

After watching this, the Palmers stop searching. They speak of feeling Alice's presence depart, decide she has shown them what she needed them to see, and move out of the house. A closing montage revisits earlier photographs and clips, highlighting figures in the background nobody noticed at the time — a pale Alice standing in the family's last porch portrait among them. Some of the images were fakes. Some were not. Whether she has truly moved on, or simply gone unnoticed all along, the film does not resolve.
