Common questions about the scariest horror movies

What's the scariest horror movie?
The film ranked first here scores highest on watchdarkly's fear axis. The fear score (0–10) measures how scary a film is, separate from gore and atmosphere, and aggregates every curator and user rating.
How does watchdarkly measure how scary a movie is?
A dedicated 0–10 fear dimension, scored independently of gore and atmosphere, averaged across all ratings — so a film can be terrifying without being gory, or gory without being frightening. A film can also be scary with and without jump scares - the mechanism of fear delivery is just different.
What makes a horror movie scary?
watchdarkly measures how scary a film is with the fear rating. How an individual calculates their own fear can't be generalized; it comes from many sources, such as psychological or visual horror. Some films generate fear with anxiety and dread, others with scares. Both ways can be executed poorly and cheaply, which drags the score down. A high fear score can come from different elements but what they share is that the film stays with you.
Are the scariest horror movies also the best?
Not necessarily. Fear and overall quality are scored on separate axes. A film can be genuinely terrifying but may not be a high-quality film "overall". Or it's a masterpiece with a slow-burn pace whose frights aren't the centerpiece. This list ranks purely on fear, so it's "what scared people most," not "what's best."
