During the Amityville investigation, Lorraine has a vision of Ed being killed by a demonic nun. Years later, in 1977 Enfield, single mother Peggy Hodgson contacts the church after her daughter Janet begins speaking in the voice of a gruff old man named Bill Wilkins, who claims the house is his. The Warrens are sent to verify the haunting. Janet levitates, speaks in tongues, and is thrown across rooms. Lorraine eventually identifies the true entity — the demon Valak, disguised as a nun, who has been tormenting her with visions of Ed's death to drive them away. Valak has manufactured the haunting to lure and destroy Lorraine. She finds the demon's name written in Ed's own painting and uses it to banish Valak. Ed pulls Janet back from the brink moments before the vision Lorraine feared would have come true.
