In 1952 Romania, a young nun at the Carta Monastery kills herself to avoid possession. The Vatican dispatches Father Burke and novitiate Sister Irene to investigate alongside a local villager called Frenchie. The abbey is built over a rift to Hell opened centuries earlier by a duke who practiced dark arts; a sacred relic — a vial of Christ's blood — was used to seal it, but Nazi bombing weakened the barrier during World War II. Valak, the demonic entity beneath the abbey, attacks them: Father Burke is buried alive in a grave and sees visions; Sister Irene encounters Valak manifesting as a nun throughout the grounds. The demon possesses Father Burke. Irene finds the relic and spits the blood into Valak's face, banishing it. As Frenchie drives them out, a post-credits flash-forward reveals the mark Valak left on him — setting up his appearance as the possessed man in The Conjuring's prologue.
