Overall
FBI trainee Lee Harker has a psychic sensitivity she has never fully named — she simply finds things, drawn toward locations and details by something beneath conscious reasoning. Her supervisor assigns her to a cold case series: families murdered in apparent murder-suicides spanning thirty years, each scene containing a coded message signed Longlegs. Harker connects to the cases in a way that feels uncomfortably personal from the first file.
Longlegs is identified and arrested: a deeply strange man with a performance of madness that may not entirely be performance, a history of Satanic obsession, and no apparent means of having committed most of the murders himself — he was never present at the scenes. The families killed themselves and each other. The mechanism takes time to surface: Longlegs makes dolls. Elaborate, handcrafted dolls that he leaves for specific families chosen through a numerological system built around birthdate patterns. The dolls are possessed, infused with something that drives the fathers to kill their families on specific dates.
The personal connection reveals itself: Harker's mother has been working with Longlegs, a true believer who helped identify target families over the decades. Harker kills her mother. She kills Longlegs. In the aftermath, reviewing the files one final time, she finds her own name in the patterns. Her birthday fits the sequence. The entity Longlegs served marked her before she was born. She closes the folder and sits with what that means.
