The Requin

Jaelyn and Kyle have booked a luxury overwater villa in Vietnam — the kind suspended above a lagoon, isolated and beautiful, meant to fix things. They are trying to reconnect after a devastating pregnancy loss. The trip has the quality of a last attempt.

The storm arrives while they sleep. By morning, the villa has been ripped from its moorings and is adrift in open ocean, the lagoon long gone behind them. No radio, no rescue signal, no passing boats. The structure itself is flooding and beginning to break apart, shedding furniture and debris into the water below. The debris attracts sharks.

Kyle is attacked and killed. Jaelyn, injured, is now alone on a shrinking platform with no realistic prospect of rescue and the sharks still circling. She works through what the villa has left — anything that floats, anything that could be a raft or a weapon — and tries to keep herself above water long enough for someone to notice she's missing.

She survives. The ocean gives her back.
