WNUF Halloween Special does an excellent job capturing the essence and feel of 1980s analog. The grainy, scan-lined, VHS-like picture and the campy commercials between segments of the live broadcast capture the spirit of the era and transport you back in time. Get ready for a huge injection of nostalgia. The news reporter, Frank Stewart, also has some really funny (and dark) one-liners that I loved. I found the film too light on the horror, though there's an argument that it isn't meant to be horrifying so much as a nostalgic love letter, with a lot of comedy. I did hope something sinister and twisted was cooking for the climax, but it didn't land for me. By the last third the commercials started to wear on me. They've already established the tone and the world, and more emphasis should have gone to the haunting itself, with more terror. Toward the end, the commercials dilute the final product. As for how the haunting plays out, not much really happens, and the terrifying moments are few and far between, so be aware of that going in.
