Ghost in the Cell opens in US theaters on Friday, October 2, 2026, distributed by Well Go USA as a limited release. It runs 106 minutes and is rated R. Joko Anwar wrote, directed and edited it. Before the US date it has its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, which runs September 17 to 24, 2026.

The film is not new. It had its world premiere in the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival on February 13, 2026, opened in Indonesian cinemas on April 16, and passed one million admissions there in six days. Kompas reported on April 22 that the result made Joko Anwar the only Indonesian director with seven consecutive films past one million admissions.

It has also been on Netflix in Indonesia since August 20, 2026, under its Indonesian title, Hantu Dalam Sel. It is not on Netflix in the United States. That gap is where most of the confusion about this film comes from, and it is worth understanding before October 2.

The official synopsis from Well Go USA describes a high-security prison ruled by feuding gangs and a tyrannical warden, where the arrival of a new inmate begins a series of murders. We have not seen it, because we score films only after watching them.

Streaming Release Date & Where to Watch

The short answer for US readers: theaters only, from October 2, 2026.

Ghost in the Cell is on Netflix, but not on the Netflix you are using. It was added to Netflix in Indonesia on August 20, 2026, listed under the Indonesian title Hantu Dalam Sel. Netflix licenses region by region, so an Indonesian catalogue entry says nothing about US availability, and Well Go USA holds the North American theatrical rights. JustWatch currently lists no US streaming, rental or purchase option for the film.

This matters more than usual here because the film has been out since April. Search results, social posts and streaming-aggregator pages have had five months to accumulate around the Indonesian release, and a good number of them will tell a US reader the film is streaming. It is, somewhere else.

Well Go USA has not announced a US digital, rental or streaming date. The company typically brings its theatrical titles to digital within a few months of release, but nothing has been committed for this film and we are not going to publish an estimate as though it were a date. Some aggregator pages list "coming to streaming October 2, 2026," which is that date restating the theatrical release rather than a streaming announcement.

This page and the film page will be updated the day a US digital or streaming date is announced.

Ghost in the Cell at Fantastic Fest 2026

Ghost in the Cell has its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest 2026, which runs September 17 to 24 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. The festival lists it as Indonesia, 2026, 106 minutes, directed by Joko Anwar.

The timing is useful. The first English-language reviews written for a US audience will come out of Austin roughly two weeks before the October 2 theatrical date, so there will be a critical record to read before most people can buy a ticket. Until then the English-language coverage is thin: Rotten Tomatoes carried three critic reviews at the time of writing, which is not enough to form a Tomatometer.

Two other films we are tracking play the same festival. Beware Boiúna is the opening night film and opens in US theaters the same day as this one, October 2. The Cycle premieres there before streaming on Shudder from October 23.

Is it scary, or is it a comedy?

This is the question the film's own categorisation cannot settle. TMDB files it under horror, comedy and thriller at once. Well Go USA is selling it on gore. The Berlinale programmed it in Forum, the section for films the festival frames in terms of formal and political interest rather than genre.

Writing from the Berlinale on February 27, 2026, Berlin ArtLink described the film as combining horror with slapstick comedy, and read its political commentary on Indonesian corruption as the point of the combination rather than a subtext underneath it. That is a specific claim about tone, and it is a different proposition from "scary."

Horror comedy is where our five axes do the most work, because the two registers pull the numbers apart. A film can carry a high Gore score and a low Fear score without either being wrong about it. The rating tells you something similar and no more: the MPA rated this R, which describes content rather than effect.

We have not scored Ghost in the Cell, because we score only after watching. When we have, the Fear, Gore, Atmosphere, Intensity and Overall values go on the film page, and the question gets a number instead of a genre label. It is also worth saying plainly that the film is in Indonesian and plays with subtitles in US theaters.

Joko Anwar, and why 86 countries bought this film

Joko Anwar has directed features since 2005 and is the most commercially reliable horror director working in Indonesia. Kompas reported in April 2026 that Ghost in the Cell made him the only Indonesian director with seven consecutive releases past one million admissions. The run it named is Pengabdi Setan (2017), Perempuan Tanah Jahanam (2019), Gundala (2019), Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion (2022), Siksa Kubur (2024), Pengepungan di Bukit Duri (2025) and this film.

Two of those, released internationally as Satan's Slaves and Impetigore, are the films most US genre audiences will have encountered, largely through Shudder. Neither is in our catalog yet, which is a gap on our side rather than a comment on the films.

Ghost in the Cell sold to 86 territories, a figure the production has used in its own marketing and one Indonesian trade coverage reported through the spring. Well Go USA took North America. The production companies are Come and See Pictures, Rapi Films and Legacy Pictures, with Korean co-production from Barunson E&A. Ical Tanjung shot it and Aghi Narottama scored it, both regular Anwar collaborators.

Abimana Aryasatya, Bront Palarae, Dimas Danang, Endy Arfian, Lukman Sardi, Yoga Pratama and Morgan Oey lead the ensemble.

Is Ghost in the Cell on Netflix?
It is on Netflix in Indonesia, where it was added on August 20, 2026 under the Indonesian title Hantu Dalam Sel. It is not on Netflix in the United States. Netflix licenses region by region, so an Indonesian listing does not mean US availability.
Where can I watch Ghost in the Cell in the US?

Is Ghost in the Cell scary?
Unknown until we have seen it. It is rated R and is being marketed on gore, but a rating measures content rather than fear, and reviews from its Berlinale premiere describe it as mixing horror with slapstick comedy. TMDB files it as horror, comedy and thriller at once. We score films only after watching, so its Fear, Gore, Atmosphere and Intensity values will go on the film page after release.
Is Ghost in the Cell a horror movie or a comedy?
Both, on the available evidence. It is categorised as horror, comedy and thriller, and the Berlin ArtLink review from the Berlinale describes horror combined with slapstick comedy and political satire about corruption in Indonesia. How the balance actually plays is what our scores will measure.
Is Ghost in the Cell in English?

The MPA rated it R for its US theatrical release. No full rating descriptor has been published, so the specific content cited in the rating is not on record.
Is Ghost in the Cell based on a true story?
No. It is an original screenplay by Joko Anwar. Reviews from its Berlinale premiere read it as a satire of Indonesian institutions rather than an account of specific events.
Do I need to have seen other Joko Anwar films first?
No. It is a standalone film and not part of any of his existing series.
How long is Ghost in the Cell?
106 minutes, or 1 hour and 46 minutes.
