The Cycle ends without a cure. Meg's father, Peter Stump, is dead: he took his own life years ago, and the werewolf curse has been reanimating his dead body ever since. Meg survives the creature on the beach until sunrise, and by the final scene she and Marks have the body chained up and are running tests on it, trying to undo the curse. Ian does not survive the film; Marks does. There is no post-credits scene.
The rules the ending runs on
The transformations follow the full moon, and that is what the title refers to: the lunar cycle. The curse spreads by bite, and the film is clear that it does not need its host to be alive. Meg notes that insects never swarmed Peter's body, and her explanation is that they knew he was not dead. In the film's rules, Peter is biologically dead and so is his tissue; the curse reanimates the body.
Lou Bishop survived an attack years ago, and the large number of blood transfusions used to save him left him linked to the creature. When it transforms he feels it, mentally and physically, but he never transforms himself.
What happened to Meg's father
Peter left Joni and Meg to protect them. The tapes he left behind show him working on ways to break the curse and trying to get back to his family. When nothing worked, he hanged himself.
His death did not end the curse. His body stayed biologically dead, and the curse kept reanimating it. The corpse killed the mother and daughter at the opening crime scene, then changed back to human form and was left there. Investigators found it thirty-six years after Peter went missing.
The fight on the beach
The climax happens on the beach outside Peter's hideout, and Meg faces the creature alone. Marks is still inside, hurt but alive. Ian is already dead by then; he dies much earlier in the film.
Meg fights it off and impales it, which stops it from killing her and buys her time, and she holds out until the sun comes up.
The final scene
The film ends with Meg and Marks experimenting on Peter's chained-up body. They inject him with something, and that is the last we see. The film does not say what is in the syringe or whether it works.
Why we tag the ending hopeful
Meg learns why her father left. He stayed away because he was afraid of what he would do to his family, and he spent his last years trying to get back to them. She also gets a purpose: to cure him. The film ends with that work under way, which is why we tag the ending hopeful.
