What is The Mandela Catalogue?
It is an analog horror series that Alex Kister started posting on YouTube in June 2021, as a teenager. It is set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, which is overrun by shape-shifting creatures called Alternates. Fangoria describes them as "uncanny doppelgängers."
The series is told through found footage that looks like old public service tapes. Vol. 1 opens with a safety announcement warning viewers about Alternates. Another early video is a training tape for 911 operators on calls involving them.
His channel has about 1.08 million subscribers as of October 2026.
Where to watch The Mandela Catalogue series, and in what order
The whole series is free on YouTube, almost all of it on Alex Kister's channel. JustWatch counted 19 videos in the official playlist in July 2026. As of October 21, 2026 no footage of the film has been released, so any upload calling itself the full movie is not the film.
The six numbered volumes are the backbone. In upload order, with the shorter entries between them left out:
Vol. 1 (August 2021), Vol. 2 (January 2022), Vol. 333 (June 2022), Vol. 4 (November 2022), Vol. 5 (June 2024), Vol. 6 (March 2026).
The shorter videos between them, such as Intruder Alert (August 2021) and Exhibition (October 2021), fill in the story, so the full playlist is the way to see everything. Vol. 1 was re-released in a Restored Edition in April 2023. Mystifying Oracle, on the same channel, is a related series.
What is the movie about?
As of October 21, 2026, the studios haven't said. Kinocheck reported in July 2026 that no plot details had been revealed, and Den of Geek reported that it is not yet known how closely the film will follow the series.
In May 2025, according to Wikipedia, Kister described his screenplay as following a group of high school graduates after a classmate disappears. The studios have not confirmed it.
Who's making it
Amazon MGM Studios, Scott Stuber's United Artists and Steven Spielberg's Amblin won the rights in July 2026. TheWrap described "an extremely competitive 11-studio bidding war." The price was not disclosed.
Spielberg and Holly Bario produce for Amblin, Aaron B. Koontz for Paper Street Pictures, and Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists. Kister and Clifton also produce.
What analog horror is
Analog horror is horror made to look like old recordings: VHS tapes, broadcast interruptions, emergency alerts, training videos. Den of Geek describes it as "relying on fragmented storytelling, low-fidelity presentation, and audience interpretation." It grew up on YouTube.
TheWrap names Kris Straub's Local 58 and Kane Parsons' The Backrooms alongside The Mandela Catalogue as defining titles of the form. Parsons directed the Backrooms feature for A24, released in 2026. Curry Barker, another director who came up on YouTube, had his feature Obsession reach US theaters the same year. Both are on Watch Darkly with our scores, listed below.
