Fear changes everything.
Something came in off the water and trapped a town in a supermarket. The monsters outside are bad. What happens inside is worse.
After a violent storm rolls out, a thick mist rolls in from the direction of a military base — and what is living inside it has no interest in negotiating with the people trapped in the supermarket.

Overall
A violent storm damages artist David Drayton's lakehouse in rural Maine. The next morning he drives to town with his young son Billy and neighbor Brent Norton. A thick unnatural mist rolls in from the direction of the Arrowhead Project — a classified military installation nearby. The supermarket where they shelter is attacked by unseen creatures from the mist: giant insects, massive tentacled organisms, pterodactyl-like fliers with paralyzing stingers. People die. Religious zealot Mrs. Carmody rises from fringe annoyance to genuine threat, convincing an increasing faction that the mist is divine punishment and that human sacrifice is required. A soldier on leave confesses the Arrowhead Project was experimenting with interdimensional rifts — apparently punching through to another world. Norton leaves with a group into the mist to prove it is harmless; none return. Carmody is shot by Davy. A small group makes a break in David's car. Driving south they encounter creatures of escalating size — one creature blots out the sky. The car runs out of gas. Convinced there is no hope and no escape, David uses his last four bullets to kill his son, two other survivors, and a woman — mercy deaths. He steps into the mist to die. Military vehicles emerge from the mist immediately after. Soldiers are burning creatures and saving survivors. The rescue was moments away.
