Overall
Steve and Jenny, a young couple from London, drive to a remote quarry lake in rural England for a romantic weekend. The spot has been claimed by a local group of teenagers led by Brett — territorially, with the easy confidence of young men who have learned they can behave however they like in places where no one is watching. Steve tries to hold his ground over the campsite. The confrontation does not end there.
Brett's crew steals their car and their possessions. When Steve's dog attacks one of them and is killed, Steve confronts Brett again, and in the struggle accidentally cuts him. The teenagers — with no apparent sense of proportion and a casual intimacy with violence — turn the situation into a hunt. Steve is captured. What follows is an extended, methodical sequence in which Brett compels his friends to participate in hurting him, threatening to turn on anyone who refuses.
Jenny escapes into the surrounding countryside and runs. There is no phone signal, no passing traffic, no help in the farms she reaches. She witnesses the teenagers killing Steve through the trees but cannot get to him. Eventually she finds a road and a lit house. She pounds on the door. People open it. They are Brett's family.
Brett's parents call the others. The parents arrive. They have heard their children's version of events and they choose their children. It is not a difficult choice for them. They do not appear conflicted. The final act is quiet and matter-of-fact. Jenny is killed. The film's final image is the ordinary domestic scene of the people who decided this was acceptable.
