Ouija

Years earlier, Laine Morris and her best friend Debbie play with a Ouija board as children, reciting its three rules: never alone, never in a graveyard, always close with 'goodbye.' As an adult, Debbie finds the same board in her attic and uses it by herself. Strange phenomena follow. She tries to burn it; it returns to her bedroom intact. After looking through the planchette and trance-falling under its lens, she hangs herself with Christmas lights — staged to look like suicide.

Laine doesn't believe it. She finds the board among Debbie's belongings and convinces her boyfriend Trevor, Debbie's boyfriend Pete, their friend Isabelle, and her younger sister Sarah to hold a séance at the empty house. They contact something that signs as 'D' and writes 'hi friends'; Laine reads it as Debbie. They leave without closing the session.

Phenomena follow each of them home. Laine pushes for a second sitting. This time the spirit signs 'D.Z.' and forces images into their minds: a young girl with her mouth sewn shut. The group decides they have made contact with a trapped child ghost.

Laine investigates the house. Decades ago, the Zander family lived there — a mother and two daughters. The younger, Doris, became dangerous when spirits began speaking through her; her mother sewed her mouth shut to silence them, then killed her to contain what was inside. Doris's surviving sister Nona, now elderly, tells Laine that Doris's spirit stayed bound to the board and to her hidden body. The only way to break it is to find the remains and burn them along with the board.

The entity picks the group off, staging each death as suicide or accident. Pete, Trevor, and Isabelle die in turn. Laine realises the contact was never Debbie. Doris was using their grief as bait, and Debbie's earlier attempts to burn the board had been a panicked effort to stop what she had already started — Doris staged the hanging to silence her.

Laine and Sarah find a sealed chamber inside the house where Doris's body has been hidden for decades. They attempt the ritual Nona described. Doris attacks, trying to pull them through the board into her side; Debbie's spirit appears long enough to help them resist. The sisters force the body, the board, and the planchette into a furnace and burn the conduits.

The house quiets. At home afterward, Laine finds the planchette intact on her bed despite the fire. She lifts it and looks through its lens. The film cuts before showing what she sees — the connection has not been fully closed.
