In 2020, most of humanity has been wiped out by armored blind creatures with hypersensitive hearing that attack anything they detect. The Abbott family — Lee, Evelyn, and their deaf daughter Regan and son Marcus — live on a rural farm in enforced silence, communicating in sign language, walking on sand paths to muffle footsteps. Their youngest son Beau is killed at the start of the film when he activates a toy rocket. A year later Evelyn is pregnant: labor contractions, a crying newborn, and a creature in the house. On the night she gives birth alone in the farmhouse — suppressing her screams in a bathtub — a creature enters the building. Lee and Marcus are separated at a waterfall where sound provides cover. Regan discovers accidentally that the feedback from her cochlear implant emits a frequency that incapacitates the creatures. Lee sacrifices himself — screaming to draw a creature away from the children. Evelyn, now knowing about the implant, broadcasts its feedback through the farm's PA system and destroys the creature inside. She and Regan face the remaining creatures, now armed.
