Overall
In 1973 Los Angeles, social worker Anna Tate-Garcia investigates Patricia Alvarez, who has locked her two sons in a closet. When Anna removes them for their safety, the boys are drowned that night by La Llorona — the spirit of a woman from Mexican legend who drowned her own children in a jealous rage and now steals the children of others to replace them. La Llorona then fixates on Anna's children, Chris and Samantha, burning them when she touches them. Anna is referred to Rafael Olvera, a former priest turned curandero who uses folk remedies and sacred objects to fortify the house. The spirit infiltrates despite every measure. In the climax Anna kills La Llorona with a cross carved from the branch of the willow tree where La Llorona originally killed her children — wood from the site of her crime. Father Perez, a character from the Annabelle film, appears briefly as a connecting thread to the wider Conjuring universe.
