Every Zach Cregger Horror Movie, Ranked by Score

Zach Cregger has directed three horror films in four years: Barbarian (2022), Weapons (2025) and Resident Evil, which Sony Pictures released in US theaters on September 18, 2026. Ranked on the Watch Darkly curator scale, Resident Evil leads at 7.7 overall, ahead of Barbarian at 7.5 and Weapons at 7.1. It is also the least frightening of the three on our Fear axis, at 4.1 against 5.5 for Weapons and 6.9 for Barbarian. Cregger said before release that it would be "not at all like" his first two horror films and compared it to Evil Dead II. The scores bear the difference out: it is the goriest of the three and the least scary, and it plays much of its story for laughs.     Resident Evil(2026)

    Cregger's best film by our scores at 7.7, and his least scary at Fear 4.1. Bryan, a medical courier, has one night to get a package through the Raccoon City outbreak, and most of the laughs come from him reacting the way an ordinary person would. It also leads the three on gore at 7.0 and on atmosphere at 8.1, much of that from a snowbound first half lit by little more than headlights and a flashlight.     Barbarian(2022)

    Barbarian, Cregger's solo writing and directing debut, scores 7.5 and is the scariest of his films by our numbers at Fear 6.9. A woman arrives at a rental house in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood the night before a job interview and finds it already booked by a stranger, and the film holds that unease for a long time.     Weapons(2025)

    Weapons scores 7.1, third of the three, but it is the most intense at 7.7, the hardest of the three to sit through. Seventeen children from the same third-grade class run out of their homes at 2:17 a.m. on the same night, and the film follows the town's search from one person's point of view after another. Fear sits at 5.5, between the other two: its hold on you is the mystery more than the fright.
