Body Bags is cozy horror. The coziness oozes from the film technology and style used in the 90s and has nothing to do with the actual ripping apart of life. As a 90s kid, of course 1993 is a sweet spot: shot on film, so the highlights bloom a little, the blacks run deep, and grain gives the image a texture that feels "alive". The spaces, and spaces between spaces, are real and the objects have weight. A fluorescent gas station glowing on a dark lot, wood paneling, a payphone, a tube TV, the Yellow Pages next to the register. None of it announces its age the way a flip phone or early CGI would. A payphone just sits there. That's why the era holds up even if you weren't there for it. The nostalgia (for me) is palpable. It's modern enough, but distant from now (2026). That's the coziness. The movie invites you into a warm, familiar place, and then it kills people there. I have to mention Mark Hamill being in the "Eye" segment. I spent a lot of my childhood growing up with Star Wars, so as if the 90s nostalgia fuel wasn't enough, Mark Hamill playing a character with a complete 180 from before had me fangirling like a starstruck teen. It's Luke Skywalker dude! Nostalgia aside, this is an extremely fun romp through the horror minds of John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper. The stories are lean and distinct enough to justify the anthology in a 95-minute runtime. Slasher, body horror, and supernatural/possession. There's something here for everyone.
