Common questions about slasher

What makes a film a slasher?
A slasher centers on a killer who stalks and murders a group of victims one by one, usually with a bladed or handheld weapon. The killer is often masked, disguised, or silent, and the kills are frequently staged as individual set pieces. Common structural features include a group of young protagonists, a body count built up over the film, and a surviving character who confronts the killer, often called the final girl.
What was the first slasher movie?
There is no single agreed-upon first slasher, and the origin is debated. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) are frequently cited as early precursors, and Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974) is often named for establishing the stalking-killer and holiday-setting template. John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) is widely credited with codifying and popularizing the formula that defined the subgenre's late-1970s and 1980s boom.
What is a final girl?
The final girl is the last surviving character in a slasher, a woman who confronts or outlasts the killer and survives the film. The term was coined by film scholar Carol J. Clover in her 1992 book Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film. Clover analyzed the character as a recurring convention of the slasher and examined its role in audience identification and gender representation.
Do slasher movies have to be gory?
No. Gore levels vary across the subgenre, and a slasher is defined by its killer and stalking-and-killing structure rather than by graphic violence. Halloween (1978) relied largely on suspense and contained very little on-screen blood. Other films in the subgenre feature explicit gore, so the amount of graphic content differs from title to title.
