Overall
Sidney Prescott has gone into hiding under an assumed name, working remotely as a crisis counselor. The production of Stab 3 in Hollywood becomes a murder scene as cast members are killed in the order their characters die in the script. Dewey is working as a technical advisor; Gale investigates. Each murder comes with a photo of Sidney's mother Maureen as a young woman — a woman who, research reveals, had a secret Hollywood past as an actress named Rina Reynolds before fleeing the industry. A police detective named Kincaid helps the investigation. Roman Bridger, the director of Stab 3, is unmasked as the killer. Roman is Maureen's illegitimate son, conceived during her assault in Hollywood and abandoned. He blames Maureen for his existence and Sidney for inheriting a life he was denied. Crucially, Roman reveals he was the one who showed a young Billy Loomis footage of Maureen's affairs — he orchestrated the original Woodsboro murders to punish Sidney. Sidney kills Roman in the Stab 3 set — a replica of her original Woodsboro house. Dewey proposes to Gale. Sidney opens her front door.
