Ending Guide

Horror Movies With Ambiguous Endings

Films that end on a question, ranked by the Watch Darkly curator score. Spoilers by design.

Spoiler warning: this page reveals how every film listed ends.

An ambiguous ending leaves the resolution open. The film stops before it tells you who won, whether the threat was real, or what happens next, and it does that on purpose. This guide collects the films in our catalog tagged that way, ranked by the curator score.

This page spoils that these films end on a question rather than an answer. It does not describe the specific final scene, only that the ending is left open.

A good ambiguous ending is not the film running out of road. It hands the last move to you, and the not-knowing is the part that stays with you.

Common questions

What is an ambiguous ending?
An ambiguous ending is one the film deliberately leaves open. It withholds a clear resolution, so more than one reading of what happened is valid. The uncertainty is the intended effect, not a gap the film forgot to fill.
Does this page contain spoilers?
Yes. Every film here is listed because its ending is open-ended, so the page reveals that much by design. It does not spell out the final scene, only that the resolution is ambiguous.
