A bittersweet ending resolves, but it charges for it. Someone survives, or the threat is put down, and the same closing beat carries the loss that made it possible. Relief and grief land together, and neither cancels the other.

This page spoils that these films end on a mixed note. If you would rather not know how a film resolves, this is the wrong page.

Horror uses this shape more than any other genre. The survivor who walks away changed, the victory bought with someone who did not make it. When it is done well, the ending feels both won and paid for.

Common questions

What is a bittersweet ending?
A bittersweet ending is one that resolves on a mixed note. Survival, escape, or victory is real, but so is the loss it cost, and the final beat carries both. It sits between a hopeful ending, where the relief is genuine and clean, and a downer ending, where relief is denied entirely.
Does this page contain spoilers?
Yes. Every film here is listed because it ends on a mixed note, so the page reveals the ending valence by design. It does not describe how the film gets there, only that the ending is bittersweet.
